Cullasaja Falls

Cullasaja Falls is one of the many beautiful waterfalls that can be found in the Cullasaja River Gorge, located just 8.8 miles west of Highlands, North Carolina. The falls are situated along a very narrow and curvy stretch of highway, making it difficult to get a good view of the falls from the road. However, there is a small pull-off on the left side of the highway that provides a perfect viewing spot for the waterfall. Cullasaja Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Cullasaja River Gorge, standing at an impressive 250 feet high. The best time to see the falls is after a heavy rain when the water flow is at its strongest. However, even during dry periods, Cullasaja Falls is still an impressive sight.

Bust Your Butt Falls

Bust Your Butt Falls, also known as Quarry Falls, is a popular swimming hole and natural slide on the Cullasaja River along US Highway 64 near Highlands. It’s a short walk over some rocks from a couple of pull-offs for parking. For added excitement, there is a “jump-off” rock for diving into the chilly waters. Just be extra careful since the rocks can be slippery! And check the depth of water before diving, since levels can vary depending on rainfall. The many large rocks also make a great spot for watching, picnicking, and sunning. So whether you’re looking to take a dip or enjoy the scenery, Bust Your Butt Falls is definitely worth visiting!

Glen Falls

Glen Falls is one of the most beautiful and challenging triple waterfalls to visit in the area. The falls are gorgeous but be prepared for a challenge when visiting this trail. The 2.4-mile out and back trail includes a nearly 800’ elevation change and is not for the faint of heart. Keep in mind that what goes down must eventually come back up again when planning your hike. Glen Falls is located in the Nantahala National Forest and has four great scenic stops along its path. Pay attention to which turn on the trail you make as there are several off-shoots from the main trail. Glen Falls is a great waterfall to add to your hiking bucket list!

Secret Falls

Secret Falls is a gorgeous 50-ft. waterfall on Big Creek that cascades into a serene pool, deep in the Nantahala National Forest near the Georgia state line. The 1.3-mile out and back trail is a moderate hike with less than a 250’ elevation change. The trail is primitive and mostly maintained although it can get muddy at times. Secret Falls (also known as Big Shoals Falls) is a gorgeous 50-ft. waterfall on Big Creek that cascades into a serene pool, deep in the Nantahala National Forest near the Georgia state line. What an idyllic swimming hole on a hot summer’s day!
